What it means and why
Astigmatism means the eye does not focus light equally in different directions. The cornea or internal lens can contribute. For regular astigmatic correction, CYL describes a power difference and AXIS describes its orientation.
The familiar “rugby ball” comparison is only a shape analogy. It does not mean the entire eyeball has that outline, and it does not let someone diagnose the amount or axis by inspecting a photograph.
A worked example
Teaching scenario: a lamp or lettering looks stretched in one direction even when distance sphere has been adjusted. That observation helps describe the problem, but glare, dry eye and other causes can produce overlapping symptoms. An examination is needed to separate them.
What it does not tell you
Astigmatism is not an alternative word for myopia, and an axis of 180° is not a severity score. Both sphere and cylinder can appear in the same prescription.
THINK IT THROUGHCan someone have myopia and astigmatism together?
Yes. They describe different aspects of refraction, which is why both SPH and CYL may be recorded.
