What it means and why
A general-purpose progressive changes power from the upper distance area through intermediate powers to a lower reading area. The eye reaches different zones by changing gaze direction. Because power changes across a surface, the usable view is not equally wide or clear everywhere.
Position matters as much as the zone map. A slipping frame moves the zones relative to the pupils, and a monitor placed high may make the wearer lift their chin to find a clearer area. A design name does not tell you whether your frame and desk setup suit it.
A worked example
Teaching scenario: a wearer sees distant signs clearly but strains their neck at a monitor. Record the monitor distance and height and check the frame fit before assuming the whole prescription is wrong. A task-specific office lens has different coverage and is not a substitute for driving glasses.
What it does not tell you
A larger price or shorter corridor does not automatically give a wider view. Ask to discuss the actual reading, screen and distance tasks and how the fitting will be checked after collection.
