How to understand it
A younger eye may compensate through accommodation. A small amount of hyperopia before myopia develops is sometimes called hyperopic reserve: it describes a refractive state, not a store that guarantees protection. Childhood development must be assessed in context, not from a fixed target number.
An example
A child who reads a distance chart may still need an examination for persistent near difficulty.
A common mix-up
Hyperopia does not guarantee excellent distance vision and is not another name for presbyopia.
