Accommodation explained

The eye’s adjustment of focusing power for different viewing distances.

Eyes and vision · Updated

What it means and why

Accommodation is the eye’s active change in focusing power, involving the crystalline lens and its controlling structures. It helps shift focus from far to near. This is separate from convergence, the inward turning of the eyes, even though the two usually work together in near viewing.

An optical demand is not the same as a prescription. The required response depends on viewing distance, existing refractive error and any glasses already in place.

A worked example

Teaching model: for an eye corrected for distance, a target at 50 cm represents roughly 2 D of near focusing demand, while 25 cm represents roughly 4 D. This simplified reciprocal-distance model explains why bringing a phone closer increases demand; it is not an ADD recommendation.

What it does not tell you

Accommodation cannot be inferred from pupil size or a single report of tired eyes. Focusing ability, eye coordination and ocular surface problems need different assessments.

THINK IT THROUGHDoes bringing a book closer usually increase focusing demand?Open the explanation

Yes in the distance-corrected teaching model. How much a person can supply is a separate measurement.
